In 1954, Michael Vogel has a life many war orphans could only dream of; a loving adoptive family, a best friend as close as a brother and a promising military career. He knows he should be grateful, but deep down inside, something is missing. Michael has no memory of his former life until an AP photograph in the local newspaper reveals an evil face amongst the soldiers of the Foreign Legion fighting in French Indochina. The man's face stirs memories of Michael's forgotten past, his family and their fate. Enlisting the aid of a friend in the newly formed CIA, Michael devises a mission to Dien Bien Phu to bring the man to justice. Caught in the midst of an escalating war, will Michael find the man who haunts him? What other revelations lay ahead in the jungles of Vietnam and who will survive?

Kidon R H Dickinson Books Reviews

Hats off to the author. That sir, is one helluva first novel. You left me wishing for more, so for me the story has just begun. I will anxiously wait for you to continue telling it.
To other readers, this is a very poignant story with plenty of twists and turns. I think you will feel pulled into the story. I think you will be left wondering ... what happens to Misha or the other characters next.
Kidon is a great story about friendship, family, love, courage and revenge. The author does a great job of making you fall in love with the main characters while hating the villain. The book is so captivating that it is hard to put it down. While there are times of anger and sadness, the book is broken up with enough comedic tones that make you laugh out loud.
This book has several levels. On one level, this is an action adventure book about a young man’s quest to find the man who inflicted pain and death upon his family in Nazi Germany. On another, it is about the internal conflicts driving men in the most extreme of circumstances – war! It features several characters and delves into the motivations driving them.

One character, Walter Vogel, permeates the entire book. Walter is driven to always do the right thing, whether it is crafting the perfect item on his blacksmith’s forge; rescuing an Allied soldier in the trench warfare of World War I; or standing up to Nazi oppression as a Jewish prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. His influence is felt throughout the book and his penetrating, powerful presence drives the actions drives the actions of the other characters.

The story explains why Michael Vogel, a United States Military Academy cadet, feels driven to avenge his father by seeking the man who killed his father and mother. He must travel to the besieged French outpost of Dien Bien Phu as part of a rag-tag action team from the newly formed CIA. Although AWOL from West Point, Michael must prove his worth in battle as his team and members of the French Foreign Legion battle overwhelming odds before getting his shot at revenge.

There are many levels to this book and even if the title. In the book, the Kidon is a perfectly fashioned bayonet with an intricate handle and high tempered steel. But I wonder if is any coincidence that the Kido is also a highly trained commando unit of the Israeli Mossad.

I noted parallels to several other works as I read this book (Faulkner’s “A Fable” about the Christmas truce and the conflict between good and evil men come to mind).

If you want to read an action adventure book with many levels to it, this book is for you.
Every once and a while a book comes along that inspires you to be the HERO of your own story. This is such a book. Author R.H. Dickinson has written a winner... If "History" repeats itself, another good read is ahead. Anymore on the horizon? This avid reader is waiting......
A wonderfully written tribute!
Fantastic Read was hard to put it down
I was captivated by the story. I've always been a fan of adventure stories with a war background. I've read WWI and WWII books, but this one has a unique blend of both and throws in Vietnam for an added bonus.
The characters are full, the story exciting and the end...well let's just say it's one of the most satisfying you'll read.

I just read KIDON for a second time. I was so taken by the characters, I felt compelled to go back. What a great read.
